How to Find Out What Utilities Are Required for Your Home

Moving into a new home involves a few essential tasks, one of which is setting up the utilities you need. To avoid unexpected surprises, it's important to understand which utilities are required for your property and how to set them up. Here’s a guide to help you determine what utilities are needed for your home.

• If you’re using the utility set-up website, your property manager may have already set what utilities are required for your home. This can streamline the setup process and help ensure you don’t miss any essential services.

• Your lease agreement is the first place to look for information about utilities. It often outlines which utilities you are responsible for setting up and paying for. Some commonly required utilities include:

  • Internet

  • Electricity

  • Gas

  • Water and Sewer (in some cases could be separate)

  • Trash Services (in some cases)

• Make sure to review your lease carefully to see if any specific providers are mentioned or if certain utilities are included in your rent.

• In some cities or regions, certain utilities (such as water or gas) are managed by designated providers. To check for local requirements:

  • Navigate to your utility set-up form or research online.

  • Visit utility provider websites or local government websites.

  • Some providers may also allow you to check by address if their services are required or if multiple options are available.

• If you are moving to an apartment complex or community with a Homeowners’ Association (HOA), certain utilities, such as trash collection or water, might be bundled with your rent or community fees.

• Check with your property manager or leasing office to confirm which utilities the HOA handles and which ones you’ll need to set up yourself if your utility set-up form does not reflect this already.
